double stop helix

Public art sculpture

Commissioned by American Pianists Association for Piano pARTs exhibit on Monument Circle, Indianapolis

Double Stop Helix speaks to the idea that we are all ingrained with music on a fundamental level. It’s in our DNA. Expression, organization, vibration, construction, rhythm, melody and harmony - all working with a common language. The piece utilizes the internal bracing of the piano to create a vertical helix with the piano wire, the hammer and the damper mechanisms. The base of the sculpture uses the piano shell and keys to infer radial human cities as a foundation for this conversation - effectively generating, balancing and supporting the helix metaphor.
